Memorial Day and Corpus Christi

Sunday, May 29. Memorial Day weekend: the unofficial first day of summer vacations, and something more serious. I've talked about that before. (This Season: Memorial Day)

The other big deal this weekend, for folks at the two Catholic parishes, is the Corpus Christi procession from Our Lady of the Angels to St. Paul's.

And - arriving at St. Paul's. (May 29, 2016)

That's all I had the energy for this week. The family is (slowly) getting over whatever this bug is, and I'll end on that 'up' note.

Memorial Day Weekend

Sunday, May 24, 2015. Memorial Day Weekend. Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer's vacation season. It's also a time to remember folks who died while serving in this country's military.

The weekend has been overcast and damp so far. These photos are from Wednesday.

The "house with no 'front yard' " is on Sauk Centre's north side, near the water tower. It sits behind two newer one-story houses, with only a driveway connecting it to the street. There's a story behind that: but I don't know what it is.

Lilacs. Again. (May 20, 2015)

That's it for another week. I'll be back next Sunday, most likely.

Downtown Mural in the Works

Sunday, May 25, 2014. Memorial Day weekend. My wife, son, and #3 daughter went to Itasca State Park this week, meeting #2 daughter and son-in-law there. I'm told that they had a good time, and #2 daughter took some photos.

The May 22, 2014, Sauk Centre Herald ran "Mural project to spruce up corner on Main Street" on the front page. Looks like there's a plan to paint a mural on the side of the Belmont building. I gather that's the one Nic's Diner is in these days.

Since the theme is "let's get the red out," the mural will probably go on the north side of the building. I like the dapper red-on-white paint job it's got: but the mural could turn out nicely, too.

The paper says that three artists will be involved: Roger Reinardy's developing the design, working with Minneapolis artist Carole Bersin, and Diane Schmiesing will get involved, too.

That's about enough name-dropping for one day.

I plan to spend the rest of this three-day weekend doing not much in particular: and be back next Sunday with photos I've taken.

Memorial Day Weekend, and a Huge - Shower Curtain?

Sunday, May 25, 2013. Memorial Day Weekend. Apart from going to church this morning, I plan to stay home this Memorial Day weekend. It's been a rather damp, dreary day today, anyway.

On a more upbeat note, I set out the hummingbird feeder today: in its usual spot near the webcam. Not that you'll usually be able to see much than a darkish blur when they stop by.

That's all I have this week. Next week there may be more. Then again, maybe not.

Memorial Day Weekend, 2012: Another Night, Another Storm

Sunday, May 28, 2012. Memorial Day Weekend. This weekend means quite a few things. It's another three-day weekend, the unofficial start of the summer vacation season, and a federal holiday. I gave my take on citizenship and patriotism on one of my blogs:
I'm keeping this Sauk Centre Journal brief, partly because I want to enjoy the weekend with my family: and partly because I was out of town for part of the week, and got a little preoccupied.

So I'll add a few photos, and call it a day.

We had a severe thunderstorm warning around midnight last night. Also flash flood warnings. Around two or three inches came down in as many hours.

Around midnight, sometimes the sky looked like this - - - May 26, 2012.

There's another severe thunderstorm warning in effect just now, but most of the excitement is east of Sauk Centre. Here's what wunderground.com radar showed:

Here we go again. May 27, 2012.

Like I've said before, Minnesota's weather isn't boring.

Memorial Day Weekend 2011

Sunday, May 29, 2011. It's the midpoint of Memorial Day weekend. I'm taking it easy this weekend, in sharp contrast to the folks in Charlie Company. Here's an excerpt from the Sauk Centre Herald's website:
"The community of Sauk Centre said goodbye, for the next 12 months anyway, to the 131 soldiers in Charlie Company on Wednesday, May 25, at the VictriVillage Campus as the unit prepares for their 12-month mission in Kuwait.

" 'We will deploy to write the final chapter of the Iraq war,' said Lieutenant Colonel Brian Melton, commander of the 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 194th Armor (1-194 CAB). He addressed the friends and family who gathered to support the troops that afternoon...."
(Sauk Centre Herald (Friday, May 27, 2011))
There's quite a lot more at the Herald website (saukherald.com) about Charlie Company, and their sendoff. Including photos.

Our Lady of the Angels church had a special collection for tornado relief this weekend. Weather around here has been, thankfully, much less interesting.

I plan to be back, before next Sunday, with a photo or two: but we'll see what actually happens.
